Chancellor Charles R. Matthews

A Message from Chancellor Matthews

MatthewsIt is my distinct pleasure to greet you all on behalf of The Texas State University System. For almost 100 years, this System has been helping the people of Texas attain their educational goals. Education, I believe, is the most critical need of our state at this time. Therefore, we as a System are working diligently to promote excellence in teaching and learning to provide a strong foundation for Texas’ future.

Demographic analysis projecting the population growth in Texas demonstrates clearly the tremendous challenges facing our State to provide first-rate higher educational opportunities for our high school graduates. As we address the issues associated with rapid growth, affordability and accessibility, we must remain mindful that many of the students we serve will be the first in their families to attend our colleges and universities.

The economic future of Texas is highly dependent on the success of higher education. Our colleges and universities must recruit aggressively, focus resources on student retention and produce a larger number of highly qualified graduates. All of this must be accomplished in an environment that recognizes the economic pressures of rising tuition costs on those who rely on financial aid and other student loan programs to achieve their dreams.

The Texas State University System has positioned itself to meet the State's challenges and is committed to the success of the students served.
