GIVES HURRICANE RITA UPDATE ON HIGHER EDUCATION INSTUTIONS IN SOUTHEAST TEXAS

Chancellor Matthews gives assessment and information regarding Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College-Port Arthur and Lamar State College-Orange

AUSTIN- Texas State University System Chancellor Charles R. Matthews has been working to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Rita in the Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange area. The System office is currently working on providing students, faculty, and staff that are scattered throughout the state with information via each institution’s website.

“We are grateful for the safety of all residents in the Southeast Texas area and we are now working with all federal and state agencies to see that the campuses resume classes and services in a timely manner,” stated Chancellor Matthews.

The Chancellor and a representative from Governor Perry’s office are traveling to the region to assess the damage and provide assistance. There is currently no electricity in the area and telephone service is limited.

Classes have been cancelled for the four components until further notice. We anticipate that this will be a short term action and classes will resume as soon as possible this semester. Additional information can be found at the following websites:

Lamar State College-Orange - www.lsco.edu
