John White

John White began his role as special assistant to the vice chancellors at the Texas State University System in August 2010.

Prior to joining the Texas State University System, he served under Texas House Speaker Joe Straus and Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis. In addition to his work in the Texas Legislature, John worked for the African Leadership Academy in South Africa and the William J. Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS & Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission Initiative in India.

As special assistant to the vice chancellors, John’s duties include: monitoring local, state, and federal agencies which directly affect System operations; engaging in community outreach in the geographic areas served by System universities and colleges; serving as an ambassador for the Texas State University Foundation Scholarship Programs administered through the System and Foundation offices; serving as the System organization liaison for student activities and services; as well as leading special projects related to the primary duties of each vice chancellor within the System.

John is a board member of His Place Child Care Center in Houston, Texas and former board member of the New Mexico Military Institute Alumni Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is a member of Young Men’s Business League of Austin and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. John holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morehouse College and is continuing his studies towards a masters in public administration  with a minor in finance, at Texas State University-San Marcos. He is a Leadership Development Grants Scholar with the hope of pursing his Ph.D. as a Grow Your Own Scholar.

Additionally, as graduate of New Mexico Military Institute, he holds the distinction of being selected as Regimental Commander, the highest ranked student cadet and the first African-American in the school’s history. He also studied at Universitat de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain as a National Hispanic Institute summer participant. John is a Bardoli Global Fellow and R. W. Daniels Leadership Scholar and a former participant in the Texas Legislative Internship Program.
