Products Available for Educators


Several products related to the Mathematics for English Language Learners (MELL) Initiative are available for educators. These products may be downloaded from the MELL website at no charge, or, if desired, bound paper copies or CD/DVD copies may be ordered for the cost of reproduction by printing the pdf order form and mailing or faxing it to the address shown on the order form.

 

1. Classroom Practices Framework ($3.00)

The development of this product was guided by the question "What do the findings of the Phase I MELL investigations suggest in regard to classcoloringroom practices that contribute to successful math instruction for English Language Learners?" The instrutional framework is organized into six components, each of which is comprised of a series of enabling instructional approaches that support student success.

 

2. Teachers Guide to Teaching Mathematics for English Language Learners ($5.00)

The teachers' guide is designed to help teachers make mathematics more meaningful and understandable for the English Language Learners (ELLs). The initial focus of this guide is for grades 7-11 and includes general teaching strategies that help the ELL when learning the ten mathematics objectives covered on the Texas 11th Grade TAKS Test.

 

3. Spanish Translations of Some Common Mathematics Terms Used in Middle School and High School ($2.00)

Since the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Exit-level Test covers mathematics learning objectives from grades 7-11, 90 vocabulary terms were selected to aid mathematics teahcers in those grade levels. Each mathematics term is provided in English and Spanish, along with a pronunciation guide, in order to best suport those teachers of ELL students who are not bilingual. Because a very high portion of ELL students in Texas are Hispanic, Spanish was chosen as the second language for the glossary.

5. A Report of Spanish Resources for Mathematics Teachers of English Language Learners ($5.00)

The MELL Project Team has collectyed, reviewed and prepared a list of mathematics and language resources available in Spanish for teachers of ELL students

 

6. A Summary of Mathematics professional Development Programs Used in the State of Texas ($4.00)

This report identifies twelve programs of professional development in the area of mathematics that are prevalent in the state of Texas. Each program is summarized to facilitate a comparison among the various models. Each summary includes a program overview and an in depth analysis.This product is especially relevant for math facilitators and staff development personnel.

 

7. Two Analyses of Professional Development Programs in Texas ($4.00)

A. Analysis of Existing Professional Development To Support Mathematics for English Language Learners (MELL) Using the MELL Classroom practices Framework - This produce consists of an alalysis of the twelve MELL-identified math professional development programs referencing the six components of the MELL Classroom practices Framework. Math facilitators and staff developers can use this product to select specific professional development when targeting various componen ts of classroom practice.

B. An Analysis Matrix of Professional Development Programs Used in Texas - This product is a concise reference matrix of factual information on Math Professional Development Programs used in Texas.

 

8. A Z-Fold Matrix of Professional Development Programs Currently Used in Texas ($2.00)

A handy foldout chart with color and graphics comparing current professional development programs in a concise matrix.

 

9. A Compilation of Survey Data and Focus Group Findings: Texas Secondary Mathematics Teachers Views of Needed Professional Development to Support Mathematics Instruction for English Language Learners ($2.00)

This product summarizes the perceptions of secondary mathematics teachers regarding their professional development experiences and needed professional development to support the math instruction of English Language Leanrers. Data were gathered through surveys and focus groups conducted throughout the state during Spring 2005.
