Charlie Amato, reappointed in 2013, earned his bachelor of business administration at Sam Houston State University, with which he has maintained close ties over the years, chairing the College of Business Advisory Council as well as being a Governor Rick Perry appointee to the Board of Regents.
He is the chairman and co-founder of SWBC, which advises financial institutions on how to manage risk and increase profitability. Known and respected for his innovative, relationship-building approach, his company has more than 1,400 employees and now exceeds $1 billion per year in premiums and loans. The majority of SWBC's products are targeted toward reducing risk, enhancing results, and improving profitability for clients.
Since its inception, SWBC has diversified to include several subsidiary companies: SWBC Credit Union and Banking Divisions, Employees Life Insurance Company, SWBC Insurance Services, SWBC Employee Benefits Division, SWBC Mortgage Corporation, SWBC Auto Title Services, and SWBC Reverse Mortgages. SWBC Mortgage Corporation is Bexar County’s largest mortgage banking operation, closing in excess of $400 million in loans in 2003 while specializing in making the mortgage process easier for clients. Similarly, in 2003, SWBC’s Investment Company invested assets of $345 million, producing $15.5 million in gross concessions.
Aside from other business ventures, two of which include owning automobile dealerships and an interest in five-time National Basketball Association champion San Antonio Spurs franchise, Amato recognizes the importance of giving back to the community in which he has prospered. Some of his civic and charitable activities are: University of the Incarnate Word Board of Trustees (chairman); Christus Santa Rosa Health Care Corp. Board of Directors (past chairman); Catholic Community Foundation (board member); Children’s Miracle Network (past chairman); Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Foundation (board member); Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce (past chairman); and Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation (past chairman).
Amato’s wife is Cathy and his children are Marcus and Allison.
