(BEAUMONT) - The Board of Regents of the Texas State University System today recognized Dr. Fernando Quiz of Sul Ross State University as Regents' Teacher and Chris Thompson of Sam Houston State University as Regents' Staff Member for 2016. The awards were conferred during the Board of Regents' meeting on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont.
Dr. Quiz is a professor of education at Sul Ross State University. Over the course of his career, he has maintained a reputation as a model classroom teacher committed to student success. He has earned consistent superior recognition on student teaching evaluations, and has developed curricula for 14 undergraduate and 16 graduate courses, all of which have became Education Department standards.
Ms. Thompson is associate athletic director for student services and senior women's athletic administrator at Sam Houston State University. Over her career spanning more than 30 years, Thompson has worked to secure the well-being and achievement of student athletes both on and off the field. Her efforts have resulted in student athletes earning overall GPAs higher than the general student population in each of the last 22 years.
The Board of Regents each year selects exceptional educators and staff to receive the Regents' Teacher and Staff Member awards. The awards recognizes staff who demonstrate a strong commitment to the institution and its mission, professional competency, and exceptional achievement. In addition to a framed resolution and medallion, honorees receive a $3,000 cash award and retain the title of Regents’ Teacher and Regents' Staff Member for life.
