Dr. John Hayek Appointed Interim President of Lamar State College Port Arthur (11/21/25)

Dr. John Hayek

(AUSTIN) – Texas State University System (TSUS) Chancellor Brian McCall today announced the appointment of John C. Hayek, Ph.D., as interim president of Lamar State College Port Arthur beginning January 1, 2026. Dr. Hayek, who serves as vice chancellor for academic and health affairs at TSUS, will succeed Dr. Betty Reynard, who announced her retirement earlier this week.

Chancellor McCall said the interim appointment will provide continuity and stability while allowing time to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the institution and gather input from key stakeholders, before determining next steps in the presidential search.

“Dr. Reynard’s leadership has positioned the college for continued success. As we enter this transition period, I want to take the time to evaluate the college’s opportunities for growth and ensure that the next phase of leadership builds upon her legacy,” said McCall. “Dr. Hayek’s experience and familiarity with the institution make him ideally suited to guide the college during this process.”

Hayek has led major systemwide initiatives in academic planning, student success, research development, and workforce partnerships. He is a nationally recognized higher education leader with more than 25 years of experience at the university, system, and state levels.

“I’m honored to serve the students, faculty, and community of Lamar State College Port Arthur during this important transition,” said Hayek. “Dr. Reynard’s legacy of access, excellence, and community partnership provides a strong foundation for the college’s future. My focus this spring will be on listening, learning, and working collaboratively to ensure the college continues to thrive.”

During the spring semester, Dr. Hayek will lead a structured listening and assessment process involving faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners, including industry, local government, community organizations, and education leaders from Port Arthur, Jefferson County, and the broader Southeast Texas region.

“This period will give us the opportunity to hear directly from those who know the college best,” Chancellor McCall added. “Their insights will help shape the future direction of Lamar State College Port Arthur and ensure it continues to serve as an essential educational and economic engine for the region and beyond.”
